Ben Allen • Abandoned

A native of Randolph County, Ben Allen’s love for photography began in 4-H and grew during his time at Randolph Southern High School, where he first explored darkroom photography. After graduating in 2006, Allen pursued photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) but left the program in 2012 due to the cost of tuition. Following his departure from SCAD, Allen sold his photography equipment to pay bills, which marked the beginning of a long hiatus from the art form.

Now, years later, "Abandoned" marks Allen's return to his passion for photography. The exhibition explores themes of abandonment, reflecting both the literal and metaphoric aspects of the term. Through powerful imagery of forgotten buildings, discarded objects, and even neglected people, Allen delves into the concept of a throw-away society while also confronting his personal journey of abandoning, and eventually rediscovering, his love for photography. In addition to his photographic work Allen is also unveiling one of his latest projects at the reception—a self-published coffee table book titled "March Madness in 90 Seconds," which documents the damage from the Winchester Tornado. Though the book will not be available for sale, Allen will bring a copy for attendees to view.
